My brother, Peter Turner, class of ‘65, died on July 16, 2018.
He was born August 4,1944, so he would have been 71 on Sunday.

Peter Ancil Turner Peter was born on August 4, 1947, died at home in Los Alamitos, California, on July 16, 2018. His wife, Kathleen Turner, and his sisters, Linda Turner and Julia Turner (Peter Oldham), survive him. In addition, Peter is survived by his niece, Lauren Gwin (Clinton Epps), great nieces, Lillan and Susannah Epps, and his nephew, Robert Gwin (Rachel Radcliffe). He is also survived by stepchildren, Erich Weidtmann and Sarah Rogers, and stepgrandchildren, David, Jack, and Luke Weidtmann, and Alistar and Indigo Rogers. Peter graduated from Fullerton Union High School and attended the University of the Americas in Mexico City in 1965-66. As a journalism major, he reported on student demonstrations in Mexico City in articles that were published by his local Orange County newspaper under his byline. His stories attracted the attention of the Mexican authorities, so he returned to the United States. Having served with a missionary evacuation air service while in Mexico, he became interested in flying. He attended Fullerton Junior College in 1966-67. He worked for a commuter airline and was licensed as a private pilot. In 1968, he entered the U.S. Air Force. He ended his service with a tour in Southeast Asia. His first post was as an orderly in a hospital on a base in Thailand, but his desire to fly led him to volunteer for duty as an in-flight dietician on Aerovac runs. There were planes taking off without himand he wanted to make a difference. After his honorable discharge in 1971, he trained and was licensed as an Escalator and Elevator Mechanic. He was proud to be a member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) and was known for his professionalism, strong work ethic and integrity. Peter retired in 2011. Peter learned to sail in his teens as a Sea Scout and loved sailing all his life. He owned two sailboats, successively, a 35' trimaran and a 20' catamaran. In the mid-80s, he sailed the trimaran as far as Panama. He was an enthusiastic and gracious host to friends and family on frequent sailing trips off the Southern California coast. Catalina was a favorite destination, and he enjoyed diving there. Peter is remembered by his friends and family for the joy with which he embraced life, his sense of adventure, his humor, his ability to connect with people of all kinds, in all kinds of places, the energy and courage with which he faced challenges, the strength of his convictions and his faith, and the generosity he brought to all his relationships. Family and friends will celebrate his life privately. The family asks that there be no flowers but thanks those who wish to make a donation in his memory to the American Civil Liberties Union or the Surfrider Foundation.
