Gary Hardcastle Johnson - Class Of 1953 VIEW PROFILE

FUHS 1953
Gary Johnson passed away Nov.9th 2019 at home and family was with him.  He battled pancreatic cancer for about 18 months.  It's a sad time. We will have a celebration  of life at some  point.  Probably not until January.

He was a devoted husband and father - always up for a challenge.  He was out going,  fun loving, and always put a positive spin on things.  He kept in contact over the years with high school and college classmates, buddies and airline friends.  He had a wide circle of friends here in Fallbrook, CA and will be missed by all who knew him.

1935 - 2019
Gary Hardcastle Johnson, age 84, passed away on November 9th at his home in Fallbrook, CA with family at his side after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Denver, CO to Lois Hardcastle and Gus James Cozian. At age ten, he moved to CA when his mother was re-married Floyd Gilbert Johnson. He grew up in Fullerton,CA and attended elementary, high school and one year at Fullerton Junior College. He then attended the University of Idaho in Moscow on a football scholarship earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in physical education in 1958. He and his high school classmate , Patti Quist, married in 1955 and both graduated from the University of Idaho. He was affiliated with the ATO fraternity. To fulfill his service obligation, he applied and was accepted into the Naval Flight Training program. He was accepted and served five and one half years as a Naval helicopter pilot and deployed on two eight month cruises aboard the USS Yorktown in the Pacific. He was a member of Helicopter Squadron Four doing anti-submarine warfare. He joined United Airlines in 1964 and had a thirty one year career until the mandatory retirement at age sixty. He flew the DC-6, DC-8 , 727 and finished flying on the 747-400 which was an all computerized cockpit. While most of his flying was to the Pacific Rim countries he did some flying to Australia and New Zealand. He flew his last flight to Sydney, Australia on March 13-18, 1995. After retirement he devoted himself to his avocados and lemons on their ranch in Fallbrook, CA. He liked calling himself “an avocado dirt farmer.” He took good care of their Fallbrook property as well as their beach place in Oceanside. He was a resident of Fallbrook since 1972. He and Patti traveled extensively in those years and he filled most of the places on his “bucket list”. He enjoyed playing golf and tennis as well as skiing. He was a devoted husband and father - always up for a challenge. He was out going, fun loving, and always put a positive spin on things. He kept in contact over the years with high school and college classmates, buddies and airline friends. He had a wide circle of friends here in Fallbrook, CA and will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Patti, of 64 years, their three children Brett Johnson, Adam Johnson (Linda) and daughter Julie Steen (Ron) and three granddaughters of whom he was so proud of - Michaela Johnson, Hailey Terrones (David) and Aimee Steen. The family asks, that in lieu of flowers, you make a donation in his name to the Fallbrook Land Conservancy, 1815 South Stage Coach Lane, Fallbrook, CA 92028 or the Fallbrook Art Center, 103 South Main Avenue, Fallbrook, CA 92028.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future time.
