Herbs Daughter called me about three weeks ago. She said that he wasn’t feeling well and went into the Hospital on Saturday, and died on the following Monday. She said that the doctors said that he was just worn out and died from natural causes.
Herb and I had been friends since the third grade and he and Charles Nofield and Bart Stryker (who was killed by a car accident, the driver jumped the curb as he was waking) used to meet for lunch 4 or 5 times a year.
Of course you know that Herb was the nicest person in the world!
He played football & basketball for the FUHS Indians.
He went into the Navy during the Koran war, and played football for the Navy Training Station in San Diego.
He was transferred to Barbers Point in Oahu to attend Radio School.
He was transferred to a intelligence ship the USS Orca in Hong Kong.
He was discharged from the Navy, and married Ann Hetherington who lived in Anaheim.
more . . .
He went to Fullerton Junior College and played football for two years.
He transferred to Long Beach College where he played football and graduated,
He then played Football for the Orange County Rhinos ( we called them the Wino’s) for two years.
In the meantime he and his wife owned the Rock and Bookstore at Knott’s Berry Farm until the Knott family changed management and they retired.
I have many fond memories of Herb and could go on for days telling you of his exploits!
